Women in science: from the microscope to great discoveries – a meeting of our PhD students with pupils from a Kraków school

On Friday, 6 March, as part of outreach activities promoting the work of scientists and in connection with the upcoming International Women’s Day, our PhD students – Katarzyna Karpierz, Iga Wiercińska, Honorata Wacławek, and Magdalena Dusza – led a meeting for pupils from grades 6–7 of Primary School No. 151 with Integration Units in Kraków, named after the Jagiellonian University.

During the visit, they delivered a lecture entitled "Women in science: from the microscope to great discoveries". The pupils had the opportunity to learn about outstanding women scientists, both historical and contemporary, whose discoveries have significantly contributed to the development of science in Poland and worldwide. The speakers also presented their own research, explaining what they study on a daily basis, which organisms they investigate, and why their work matters for the advancement of science.

The meeting provided an opportunity to familiarise young people with the realities of working as women scientists and to show what conducting research at the Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences, looks like.

On behalf of the PhD students, we would like to sincerely thank the school for the invitation and for the time spent together.
